Holy Week

The Holy Week is, undoubtedly, one of the most important holidays of Cabra. It was declared a Holiday of Tourist National Interest in 1989. Its brotherhoods, the historical - artistic magnificent patrimony, the quality of the images, they shape a heap of circumstances that appear with a stamp of seriousness and respect that fills the streets of Cabra. From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, twenty-six brotherhoods go out to the street with their traditional elements, symbols and titular images. The processional courtships contain varied styles in the form and the elements. Long lines of hoods that with varied habits and colours they accompany on wax, crossings and chains or lanterns on the steps of the images of Jesús and María. Scripts and cloaks of velvet embroidered in gold of the convents of the dominica of San Martín (today eliminated) and of Agustinas Recoletas. Centuries of tradition and art that there open the parades that do before the processions announce the beginning of the same ones, especially that of the evening of the Holy Friday. Banners of peaks, with ovals of the images to the oil. Stars that serve as lanterns done with tin and crystal and that with the light of the wax, give coloring and sheen to the nights of the Holy Week of Cabra. Jews and Romans, drums and trumpets. The tradition of the Holy Week stays alive in the 'bumblebees' (elongated trumpets) that with their peculiar sound they announce that there approaches the step of Jesús or María.

The early touch that is listened in the dawn of the Holy Friday. The arrow of Cabra, with singular sound and lettering. The art of the best makers of religious images of the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries left his stamp in works of marked artistic interest and devotion. The streets of Cabra, the temples, the small squares are corners of special beauty in which the steps make to vibrate to the numerous crowd that meets to attend them. Narrow alleys or wide routes, floods of grills, balconies and gates, loaded with flowers, are the perfect stage for this celebration. Along with the antiquity of the Brotherhoods, the force renovator of the youth, they start numerous traditions that go from the acts and Lenten worships, to the arrangement of tunics, happening for the making of the typical home-loving sweets (typical cakes, honey-coated fritters, fairy cakes).

    Fiestas de la Cruz

Fiestas de la Cruz in 'El Cerro' old quarter arise from the celebrations of the Holiday of the Santa Cruz that was organizing and celebrating the 'Vera Cruz' Brotherhood concerning May 3. Because of this Brotherhood is erected in San Juan Bautista del Cerro Church, the Holiday is intimately tied to this quarter. From 1991 this brotherhood procession last day to the Virgen de los Remedios by the typical alleys of 'El Cerro'. Perhaps the most typical and singular element is the tradition of 'Santacruces that the smallest extract, arranged in a wooden stretcher that four or six boys and girls usually take, on that there is erected a cross adorned with flowers and with some picture of images. The tradition orders that they should be petals of rose forming an arch, the most used flowers. The 'Santacruces goes out to the streets a few days before May 3 and the children ask for money saying 'una limosnita por la Santa Cruz' and singing a popular chant that says: 'Oh María, Madre mía, oh consuelo, celestial. Amparadnos y guiadnos a la patria celestial. The most rebellious, if they are left by the guard who accompanies the cross, they kick throwing the petals to the soil and creating a big sorrow in the group to the scream 'la partía la porra'. On the 3rd one is carried out concentration in the Plaza Vieja that ends along with the Church of 'El Cerro' and in the one that, after distributing cakes and chocolate, the awards of the contest deliver to themselves. In the last years small steps have joined to the parade, like 'tiny Holy Week', in which brothers initiate the small ones in the fights, so established in our city.

    Corpus Christi

The Corpus Christi is another date of big tradition. Cabra celebrated the Corpus procession in Thursday until 1993. The current celebration remains framed inside the liturgical holidays that culminate with the procession of Christ's Body in the rich Safekeeping of silver that survives in the Parish of the Asunción. The children of the First Communion, the whole people and his institutions are represented.

    Fair of San Juan

Concerning June 24 the first Summer fair comes in 'La Subbética', the Fair of San Juan, that leads to the 'festive summertime', not only of Cabra but of the whole region. The above mentioned fair is provided with numerous cultural attractions, sport contests, attractions, concerts, huts, bulls and recently recovered 'bonfires of San Juan'. The act that is celebrated the day of San Juan in the monument of D. Juan Valera in the Alcántara Romero Park, with the delivery of the National Award of literature that takes his name, and the concert of the Orchestra, constitutes the most excellent moment of this fair.

Throughout the whole summer different holidays and verbenas happen in the different quarters of the city. Gaena celebrates 'la Cruz' and 'Purísima Concepción' in May. It usually presents to the auctioneer that of the previous year, and constitutes a multitudinous act that concludes, from the year 1991, with the opening of the extraordinary system of illumination in charge of the Queen of the holidays. In the fair it is necessary to stand out two central moments, on the one hand the 'Bajá' of the virgin on September 4, with the triumphal entry in the arches of the old Baena street, moment in which the Mayor imposes the Mayoress's pole to Virgin, who was proclaimed by this distinction of ' perpetual Mayoress' in 1958; on the other hand to emphasize the solemn procession of the 8th, accompanied by big multitude of devout, religious and civil institutions, brotherhoods, pilgrimages, etc. The 'Batalla de Flores' of the 5th, with the chariots, is celebrated from 1954, and constitutes other of the singular and attractive elements of the fair.
